Standard 14
Students develop STEM skills and cross-cutting competencies that support workforce readiness.
Impact Narrative
Heritage Academy's goal is to prepare our students for the 21st century and beyond; therefore, we develop STEM skills and cross-cutting competencies that support workforce readiness. Cross-cutting competencies are identified in each of the PBL units. Career explorations are explored as students are given tasks through the PBLs. We make an intentional effort to invite visitors who currently work in STEM fields that relate to PBL units, to speak to our students about how they utilize STEM in their daily lives. Heritage Academy students have been gardeners creating a garden of non living and living organisms; packaging engineers designing a package for a plant to be delivered; chefs developing healthy recipes; and astronauts in training designing a presentation for NASA. Students have been graphic artists as well as community organizers creating ways to reduce the amount of trash produced in our school building and community.
Students are also introduced to STEM careers through our annual Heritage Academy career day festivities that are designed to expose students to professions that they are not aware of and in some cases do not yet exist but will exist by the time they are adults.
Heritage Academy's focus is to expose our students to as much as we can in the hope that they find something that they can relate and build into a future.
